The Minneapolis General Strike took place on January 23rd across the US. It was a large-scale labor stoppage and protest in opposition to expanded federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations and the administration’s mass deportation policies. Labor unions, community organizations, and faith leaders called for this general strike, making it the first general strike in the US in 80 years.

Many of my friends and colleagues know that I begin a greeting with “so everything’s on fire, but how are you?” This continues to be the case every day, growing stronger as senseless violence escalates. UCPEA’s Social Justice Committee has been working with fellow members who are also concerned about ICE in our communities, on a response plan should we be needed.
Contract negotiations for the new UCPEA collective bargaining agreement began in February 2025. Since then, the previous Collective Bargaining Agreement expired in July 2025, and employees are currently working under a contract extension.
If an UCPEA position is funded by federal grants and/or contracts, and that funding is paused or eliminated, the UCPEA position is still protected. These are the protections for different categories of UCPEA members: Probationary Employees, End-Date Employees, and Permanent Employees. [...]
Per the ground rules established between UCPEA and the University, members cannot be provided with written copies of the proposals being passed between both sides. However, we can discuss the negotiations, which is one of the reasons we held a town hall.
