Regional Legislative Meetings

Why You Should Come
These legislative meetings aren’t just about politics; they’re about YOU and what’s important to our membership. When you show up, you’re not just another face in a crowd; you’re able to have direct conversations with those making decisions. Let’s remind our legislators that our AFT lobbyists are out there speaking on our behalf. Your presence makes their voices even stronger!

Here’s Why It Matters
Meeting legislators face-to-face helps them remember your concerns and builds relationships they can fall back on when fighting for your issue.
When we fill the room, it sends a message that we are here and we matter. We are their constituents and so hearing what our concerns are reminds them that if they don’t represent us how we’d like, we have the power to vote them out. Together, we have the power to drive change. Let’s make sure our legislators know who they’re voting for each time they cast a vote in the general assembly.

Don’t Know What You’d Talk About?
Legislators are just like you and me. They’re easy to talk to and come to these meetings wanting to hear from you, their constituent. Even if you don’t live in one of the districts of the legislators in attendance and aren’t technically their constituent, you likely have family or friends who do and thus, your voice still matters to the legislators.
If you don’t have anything you’d personally like to discuss, there is always the budget here at UConn to talk about. We have all seen the budget crisis over the past few years, and it is largely driven by the state not funding the university’s request for funds. It is great that we can reach a tentative agreement with the university on our contract, but if the legislative body doesn’t allocate money to fund those raises, it’s not the win we deserve. Share a personal story about how the budget reductions have affected your life both professionally and likely personally.

Let’s Have Some Fun!
Each legislative meeting is being held at a different location, but each will have food and good conversation! So, bring your appetite and your ideas! Let’s make these meetings fun, engaging, and a chance to talk about what really matters while enjoying some tasty treats together with our fellow AFT union members
